Miracle Egg Day

‘Sheila! Sheila, wake up! There’s a miracle happening.’

The words, radiating excitement, penetrated her sleep. She saw nothing unexpected in their shadowed bedroom except a winkling memory still burning bright behind Roderick’s eyes. He wore a faint smile.

‘Did I miss it?’ And now she was smiling too.

But still he kept the experience to himself–just stared up through the ceiling. Then he took a big breath and looked at her.

‘It was a miracle!’

‘What was it!’ And now she was getting even more excited than he was.

‘Man! Well, there was this egg bouncing around the ceiling… I mean, rolling, and I followed it right through sleep into being awake here in this room next to you. Then it was still there, even more existing than when I was dream-looking at it. And it felt good. Like, more and more it felt good as it became more solid, as I became awake–Sheila! I was awake! And it was there! I only whispered to you, to look at it with me, after a long time looking at it.’

She turned away to look at the ceiling. She could clearly imagine the scene while listening to him, but what the hell was it? She couldn’t write off Roderick’s “miracle,” because he was the person she trusted most in the universe.

‘Okay, so was it there there? Could you have touched it. No, it would’ve been pushed away if you’d done that, hm?’

And now they were starting to finish each other’s thoughts. ‘Yeah, like maybe you coming awake did that too.’

‘What do you want it to mean?’

‘Well… at first thought, I don't want for it to mean anything. I’m just grateful it exists, even in this form: an experience I had in the past. It changes things, events like that, all by itself.’

‘You called it a miracle though.’

His eyes turned inward. He’d said that. And meant it. But did he still mean it? Had that been his dreaming mind talking, and would his waking mind use that same word?

‘I wanna backtrack,’ he said. ‘Back from “miracle” to just, it happened. That I called it a miracle is part of its happening, yeah, but I want to back off so it can bring other words to mind too.’

‘Egg event!’ she whispered,

‘Miracle Egg Day: April 17th,’ he historialized,

‘So potent it can’t yet be given real names,’ she mused.
