Snail Shell

by Angela Sloan

The luster of a creamy custard coil:

A smooth curl of minerals,

Woven together by time and pressure.

Embedded in wet sand

It peeks out from a hidden place

Of bronze-colored granules.

An eternity under water –

Without air –

You’d think it would unburden itself

Ease to the surface

And be kissed by the sun.

Angela Sloan lives and writes in New York City. Her previous works have been published by Three Rooms Press, Genre: Urban Arts, The East Village Eye, and A Gathering of the Tribes.  Her chapbook, Stories About Love, was published in 2021.
